Textured floor tile provides an inviting aesthetic but also comes with safety benefits. While textured bathroom floor tile stands out exceptionally well in a commercial or residential setting, the safety benefits truly enhance the aesthetics.
There are many bathroom floor options when considering textured tile and some have recommended uses in one space versus another. Let’s take a look at some of these options so you can make the best choice for your design.

Benefits of Textured Tile

Besides the obvious appeal of depth and dimension, textured tile is a stellar bathroom floor tile because of its anti-slip properties. While we do have our R11 Anti-Slip Finish tile, which has a gripped finish on the surface, other floor tile possesses different attributes that offer the same benefits: fewer slips and falls.

Smaller tile means more grout lines. With each grout line, you’re creating more gripping that breaks up the smooth surface of the tile… think of them as traction lines! Additionally, dimensional tile is a wise choice. The less surface area your foot touches on a potentially slick surface, the less opportunity there is to slip. Think about standing on ice: if it’s a large surface area that both of your feet fit on, there’s nothing to help gain traction, so chances are you will slip. Now, if the ice you’re standing on is divided into smaller sections with sand sprinkled between them, the surface area of your foot on the ice decreases, thus decreasing slickness. The latter is similar to a dimensional surface because less surface area is being covered by your foot at once, and the angles and grooves on the flooring allow for added friction and grip through multiple points of contact.

Here are some marble tile ideas for a textured bathroom floor:

1. Modella – This design is a multi-finish mesh mount—both honed pieces and textured relief pieces—in a rectangular design that offers a clean, linear design aesthetic that works well for textured bathroom floor tile in or out of the shower.

2. Terra Nova -Terra Nova is a neutral-toned, cream marble with subtle organic detail. This gorgeous stone is available in the Multi Finish Modella layout, as well as a Large Chevron pattern. Terra Nova is also available in several additional mesh-mounted designs as part of our Completa Series – CS-Terra Nova. Depending on the design you choose, these products can be used for your bathroom floor, walls, shower walls, or even your shower floor!

3. Jade – Offered in multiple finishes and six different sizes, Jade is a blend of sage green, cream, and grey. These soft, earth-tone colors will turn your bathroom into an oasis. There are different recommended uses for different sizes, so be sure (as with every product) to review that list on the “Product Detail” tab of our website.

6. Marvel – The name says it all… you will marvel when you look at this porcelain that emulates marble. That’s right: Marvel is not marble, but looks just like it, only easier to maintain. Available in six colors and six sizes, it’s highly versatile to use throughout your bathroom space.

If small or dimensional tile simply doesn’t fit your preferences, large format tile is still an option for your bathroom floor tile. Large format tile adds a streamlined look and sleek finish to a bathroom, especially if it is a smaller space as it adds a feel of expansiveness.  All of our porcelain products meet or exceed North American standards for slip resistance, ensuring a safe and reliable surface. This makes our entire range of porcelain tiles an excellent choice for bathroom floors, combining style with peace of mind.  Large format tiles, defined as any tile with a length of 15” or greater, are a popular choice for modern bathrooms. Several of our large format series are also available in R11 Anti-Slip Finish, featuring an aesthetically undetectable gripped texture that significantly enhances slip resistance. While we wouldn’t recommend R11 Anti-Slip Finish products for bathroom floors, it’s an excellent option for shower floors – allowing you to seamlessly extend the look of your large format bathroom tile into the shower with added safety. Tile in this category features beautiful aesthetics that emulate natural products like stone and wood—all you lose is the added maintenance natural products require!

Let’s look at a few series available in large format with R11 Anti-Slip Finish:

  1. Aequa – A porcelain product that provides the appearance of reclaimed wood, offering a warm feeling of timeworn matter that has taken on new color and nuances over time. This can be used on bathroom floors and walls, including in showers.
  2. More Wood – Another wood-emulating porcelain that will add warmth to a space, interior and exterior. Coloring and patterns throughout this tile differ from the Aequa series and provide a richer color sans the timeworn look. More Wood is also very versatile in that it can be used on bathroom  floors and walls, shower floors and walls, even steam showers and pools & spas.
  3. Canyon – Different from the two above, Canyon is hard to differentiate from slate. Canyon is very durable and mimics the natural stone of slate through its shade variations, structure, and saw-cut effects. What is similar is the versatility of uses.
  4. Invictus Vein Cut – Emulating the timeless beauty of vein-cut travertine while offering the durability and ease of porcelain, this series is available in a desirable 24” x 48” large format size and offers versatile finish options to suit any design need. Choose from a matte or polished finish for a classic look, or opt for the R11 Anti-Slip Finish (ideal for those shower floors). For those seeking to add a unique textural element, the decorative Rigato finish features a distinctive combed surface that adds depth and dimension, perfect for creating a sophisticated statement in any room.

Special Order Tile

Don’t let “special order” deter you from tile in this selection. While it may not be a tile that is stocked, the luxury of special order tile is that you can get it to meet your needs. Our Special Order Stone program gives you complete design freedom, be it limestone, marble, dolomite, slate, quartzite, and more. Special order tile offers a variety of shapes and sizes, as well as ledger panels and pavers. The dazzling designs of these products add an artistic touch. Shower Tile

Shower tile does have some limitations versus what tile can be used in the general bathroom area and is why we encourage you to review the “Recommended Uses” list that appears with each product description on our website. Lots of the tile listed above—except the special order tile—can be used on shower floors, but in specific sizes. For instance, Calacatta Gold on a shower floor needs to be Honed 2” x 2” Hex Mesh, and Jade must be Honed Penny Round ¾” Mesh. Small tile has more anti-slip properties because the smaller the tile, the more grout, which adds those lines of friction; but, also, a shower floor is going to have a slight grade to the drain and small tile adheres to surface changes in a more conducive manner. Per your preferences, if your contractor designs your shower in a way for larger tile to make sense, this is where you will need to focus on tile with R11 Anti-Slip Finish. With safety in mind, adding a bench to your shower enhances the setting but also adds convenience. Having this space to hold onto, sit on, place bottles, etc. can help prevent falls in many ways (this can be true in both residential and commercial settings and can aid in liability concerns).
