The Origin of Subway Tile

This much loved tile gets its name from its use on the walls of New York City subway stations in the early-1900’s. Its durability and easy maintenance made it the tile of choice, not only in subway stations, but on the walls in numerous commercial spaces, including hospitals and restaurants. With clean lines, the standard 3” by 6” rectangles and 4” by 4” squares became popular for their practicality and simple beauty.
