Travertine Tile
General Questions
Travertine is actually a form of limestone tile formed from mineral deposits. The formations occur as mineral-rich water permeates through sedimentary rocks, gradually leaving behind hardened deposits of travertine. The pitted texture left behind gives travertine its unique appearance.
Yes. Travertine is often used in outdoor spaces including patios, stariways, bars, and walls. Because of its natural, rustic appearance, it ages gracefully in outdoor environments.
Whle travetine is a very durable tile that can withstand heavy foot traffic and will hold up to most forms of stress, it is susceptible to cracking if it is not properly installed or maintained. We recommend consulting your contractor about the installation process of travertine to ensure it will withstand the test of time in your residential or commercial space.
If not properly maintained, travertine tile can be prone to staining. However, if properly sealed and cleaned on a regular basis, the risk of staining is low. Consult our guide to natural stone stain management to remove stains from travertine.
To clean travertine tile, we recommend using a microfiber cloth or rag, and a mixture of dish soap and warm water. You can also use a mild pH-neutral cleaner if you wish. First, make sure the surface is swept or wiped and clean of large debris. Then, using the rag or cloth, work the mixture around the surface to remove any marks or dirt. Finally, if floor tile, run a mop with warm water over the travertine to rinse it clean. Use a damp cloth if it’s wall tile, and then dry.
While we may be a bit biased, we believe travertine tile has never really gone out out style. In fact, it seems to be enjoying something of a comeback among those who may have dismissed it as outdated. With a sophisticated and modern style, travertine tile is (still) an excellent choice for use indoors and outdoors in your home or business.
