While commercial spaces must appeal to larger audiences than a home, the design should still find a way to express the style of your brand. Patterned tile is a fun way to excite your customers, create focal areas, and incorporate the mood you want to instill.

Patterned tile is a great option for walls and as flooring, in large or small quantities. Whether you’re designing a cute boutique shop, an award-winning restaurant, or a hotel lobby, patterned tile offers a wide range of design options with a unique flair.

Patterned Floor Tile

Here are some fun ideas to create focal areas in your business space with patterned floor tile:

  • Feature patterned tile in the middle of a large, open space—similar to the look of a large area rug—to present the same effect without the need to clean carpeting.
  • Outline a display case, a bar, or a large wall mirror with patterned tile. Creating this variation throughout the room draws your customer’s eye to the tiled portions.

Go all or nothing. If you see a patterned tile idea you love, go for it—even if that means it radiates throughout the entire room, like this photo from a restaurant where they selected Cementine Posa 2. Given the floor is the main focus, the décor remains subdued with solid colors, though not dull and lacking, but not busy and beautifully paired with the other elements in the room.

Sometimes it isn’t even about the pattern on each tile, but the patterns you can create with different tile. Creating unique patterns with different tiles from within a single series is a great way to achieve custom and visually stunning designs. Mixing colors and sizes within the same series can result in intricate and personalized displays across the floor surface. This can be achieved with large-format tile or small tile—the design intricacies are totally up to you. One fact to know about large vs. small tile is the effect of grout lines. Small tile will feature far more grout lines which act as friction points and can help to reduce slipping in wet spaces like kitchens or bathrooms. On the other hand, the more grout lines, the more area for trapped dirt to settle, making cleaning a little more work.

Considering safety, porcelain tile can feature a natural texture that presents a bit of grip. In the “Recommended Uses” section of each of our products, you will easily be able to determine which patterned tile is best suited for flooring. If your commercial space includes an outdoor area, or an inside area that’s prone to wetness, look for tile layout ideas that include R11 Anti-Slip Finish. This unique finish on the tile surface helps reduce the risk of slippage while being aesthetically undetectable. To create cohesion, many of the porcelain products offering R11 Anti-Slip Finish also come without it, so the same product can run seamlessly from the interior to the exterior.

Patterned Tile Walls

Patterned wall tile can be a bit easier to select as it doesn’t experience foot traffic and is easier to keep clean. Popular vertical placements of patterned tile are a kitchen backsplash, behind a bathroom vanity, and as a fireplace surround in a living room or den. When thinking about commercial spaces, the way you feature patterned wall tile is a similar concept to floor tile: create main focal areas. Highlighting certain features will draw your customer to that space. Consider outlining a display of your products on a well-appointed spot on the wall with a patterned tile accent. The tile will draw their eye to pay special attention to the area of the room—like a moth to light.

Patterned tile can be used similarly to wallpaper to liven up an entire room or one particular area. Tapestri tile perfectly embodies such an idea because it provides a modern and crisp geometric design that flawlessly features soft and soothing color tones.

Public Bathroom Patterned Tile

Maintaining bathrooms is not fun, but maintaining a commercial bathroom can be quite, let’s say, unbecoming. However, using porcelain patterned tile reduces worry. One, you want the bathroom to be crisp, clean, and calming. Two, you need it to be a hygienic space, thus requiring frequent sanitary checks/cleaning. Three, you want long-lasting, durable materials.

Porcelain tile is amazing because of its durability, versatility, cleanability, and the multitude of available products. It is perhaps the most durable flooring and facing material available. Porcelain is a non-porous material, meaning it is resistant to water and does not harbor the growth of bacteria or mold—two ideal characteristics for a bathroom floor! It is also color-permanent and stain and abrasion-resistant. Porcelain never needs to be sealed, and the cleaning is straightforward and virtually effortless. Normal maintenance for glazed or unglazed porcelain patterned tile is basic wiping with warm water and a pH-balanced neutral cleaner if needed. Avoid using heavier cleaners and detergents, though, as soap film will give a dull appearance to the tile.

Riggiole Bianco Mix features a sophisticated black and white pattern with a slightly worn, aged effect. This unique tile design includes 17 different faces, with each box containing a random mix of these patterns to create a perfectly balanced aesthetic. This would give a long-lasting, clean, and crisp aesthetic along the walls around a beautiful bathroom that’s easy to clean as its non-bacteria harboring.
