Thassos White Marble is quarried from a bedrock quarry near the city of Thessaloniki, Greece. This white crystalline marble has been used for building since ancient times. The Parthenon in Athens used this pure, white marble in its construction. To supply clean slabs the factory hand selects the best slabs and then trims any spots on the outer edge of the slab, ensuring that only pure, white material is shipped. This is noticeable when looking at a bundle of slabs because every slab is a different size.
Thassos White tile goes through the same hand selection as the slabs. These tiles can contain small brown or black spots as well as resin filled pits. Normally the crystal structure is very tight, but there will be some larger crystals that may show a grey tone. This is due to the way the light reflects off these larger crystals versus the smaller crystals. This tile may have thin brown or black veins in some pieces. When installing white marble, you must use a white thinset; using grey thinset will leave trowel lines and could stain the marble.
Piece to piece variation in shade or color are inherent in all natural stone products; therefore, when installing natural stone tile, it is recommended to mix tiles from several boxes at a time during installation to achieve the best range of color. As natural stone products, it is recommended that these be sealed to extend their longevity.
