There is no element of a design that should be overlooked, even floor tile for your walk-in shower. Actually, this is a very important element because depending on your needs, different flooring materials may suit you better than others. Whether the primary users of the shower are you or guests, or if you have children or a need for accommodations for limited mobility, there are important elements to consider in your shower tile flooring choices. Not only are aesthetics and function important, but maintenance needs consideration, too. While most tile is generally easy to maintain, there are some variations worth noting, which we will cover here.
Practicality
Each area of a home serves a function, be it a living room, a bedroom, a kitchen, or a bathroom. Within a bathroom, the ensuite bathroom may look different than the guest bathroom, which may look different than the kids’ bathroom. Design is typically a product of aesthetic appeal and function, but this all falls into practicality. What is practical depends on the space you are working with, the budget, mobility considerations, and the amount of use.

Children are rough on most things… nope: all things! Even something you wouldn’t imagine, like a shower floor. What about that toy they had to bring into the shower with them, and they dropped on the floor repeatedly? Or the shampoo bottle you have heard hit the floor several times? Or, better yet, those karate moves that they find fitting to practice in the shower (please try to deter this at all costs!)? Yes, you will be yelling from the other room, but at least you will feel better knowing the shower floor has an anti-slip finish and is ultra-durable.

Our R11 Anti-Slip Finish Tile is designed with a unique surface that has more texture and “grip” without altering its appearance, thus lowering the risk of injury from slipping on a wet floor. Reside USA porcelain tile is one of several options available with the R11 Anti-Slip Finish, which maximizes practicality in such an environment. This tile has a clean look and gives a simplistic, modern appeal that will work with many aesthetic preferences. Porcelain is one of the most durable tile materials and is easy to clean and maintain. It will last a lifetime and only needs to be wiped with a damp sponge or pH-neutral cleaner. It’s not porous like natural stone, so it never needs to be sealed, making it the ideal floor tile material for a walk-in shower space or wet room.
Extravagance
When you think of an extravagant bathroom, this is likely part of the owner’s ensuite. If you are the homeowner and designing a bathroom remodel or new build, you know you want, and deserve, your bathroom to resemble an oasis. If this is the case, you can be a bit more classic with your material selection. If you would like your space to exude elegance the beauty of marble would be a wonderful fit. Marble requires a bit more care than some other tile because it is a natural stone, thus requiring regular sealing.
For many, the benefits and beauty of marble outweigh the need for extra care. Some marble tile to consider for use in your walk-in shower are:
- CS-Skyline—warm-toned with variations of cream, taupe, and brown—which can be installed on shower walls and shower floors.
- Stone Mesh Patterns, possessing monochromatic color schemes, which would add a fashionable accent to a shower wall.
- Basketweave tile—in a variety of white and grey— which would make a stunning walk-in shower wall in your elegant bathroom.
Simplistic
Don’t let the word “simplistic” make you think the design has to be “simple.” A simplistic style may be your preferred look if you are more of a minimalist or desire a neutral base to go with your décor. A simplistic look can embody an aesthetic that would appeal to almost anyone, especially a houseguest.

When designing a walk-in shower for a guest bathroom, you may want to express your style and taste but also to make it a comfortable space. If this space is used regularly for an older family member perhaps consider making the bathroom and shower more accessible for someone with mobility concerns. Think of designing a wider opening to the shower with no raised threshold to step over and adding a shower seat.
Porcelain tile is a great option for a walk-in shower floor. It is easy to clean, easy to maintain, super durable, long-lasting, and versatile. It is easy within these options to mix and match across our series of tile options to create the perfect look.
Strong contenders to consider for your guests’ walk-in shower, either on the shower wall and/or shower floor are:
- Tivoli—a series of five colors that are created to emulate travertine stone.
- Cosmic—four colors in this series, from black to white, that are designed to look like natural stone.
- Themar—resembling desired marble tile but without the additional maintenance.
- Shibusa—inspired by the rich texture of bamboo that offers a clean, linear, simplistic look.
- Tru Marmi, which is another gem that has the appearance of marble, in five color varieties, but without the extra care and maintenance—a perfect way to embody a desired appeal but keep the overall design simplistic.
